About the Artist

Maciej Syrek graduated from the Department of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. His works are displayed worldwide in Germany, the USA, France , Austria, England, Switzerland, Japan and Australia. His creative works are strongly affected by his fascination with history, philosophy, metaphysics and the mysticism of the Old Testament BWA.

He resides in Europe and is represented in Ottawa by Parkdale Gallery.

The creative work of Maciej Syrek is romantic, supplemented from time to time, with Baroque ornamentation. His work is strongly affected by his fascination with history, philosophy, metaphysics and mysticism of the Old Testament. His roots, Krosno, Poland and its environs (the borderland of cultures called the Carpathian melting pot in which the influences of many nations, ethnic groups and religions mix into a harmonious whole) all play an important role.

His intricate bronze work promotes intensity of patina and adds to the connection with the light of the sculpture and mystic mysteriousness moods. His works are mainly figurative, sometimes seen ironically other times capturing an expression of poverty and pain. The other theme of his works is chess, which has captivated his imagination.

One of the best know contemporary artists in Europe, he lives in Krosno. A royal town from its origin in the 14th century, the city uses the coat of arms of the Piasts of Kujawy dynasty. It is a town in south-eastern Poland, until recenlty a provincial capital. Today it is a medium-sized town with the population of fifty thousand, ranking as number six among Polish towns with the best living conditions.
